You said not too formal, somewhere you can actually hear each other, and no long walks between places. This evening stays inside four streets, gets quieter as it goes rather than louder, and has one booking that matters and three places that do not need one.

One booking, the rest walk in

Book the 19:15 table and nothing else. The other three stops take walk-ins on a Saturday at these times, which means the night can bend if you are enjoying somewhere and want to stay.

The night

Where you go, and when

  1. 18:45

    Aperitivo at Fenwick Lane

Small wine bar, eight tables, no bookings. Arrive before seven and you will get one. The point of starting here is that it is three minutes from dinner and it takes the edge off arriving.

  2. 19:15

    Dinner at Sable

Booked. Mid-price small plates, tiled room, loud enough to feel busy and quiet enough to talk. Order four plates between you and add more if you want them, which is the format and is cheaper than it looks.

  3. 21:00

Walk five minutes to Thorn Street

The one bit of actual walking. It is downhill, it is lit, and it passes the covered market which is worth thirty seconds.

  4. 21:10

    Drinks at The Ledger

Basement cocktail bar, no bookings after nine, usually space at this time on a Saturday. Darker and slower than where you have been. This is the stop where the evening either settles or ends, and both are fine.

  5. 22:45

    Dessert at Calla, or home

Open until midnight, two minutes away, does one very good thing with pistachio. Treat it as optional. Having somewhere to go is worth more than going.

Sable takes bookings 14 days out and a 19:15 on a Saturday goes within a day or two. If it is gone, take 18:45 and start at Fenwick Lane at 18:15 instead. The whole plan shifts by half an hour and nothing else changes.

IfThen
It rains Everything except the five minute walk is indoors. Take the covered arcade route, which is signed from the market
You want to stay at dinner longer Do. The Ledger has no booking and is open until 01:00
It is going badly Sable to the tram stop is four minutes and there is one every six
It is going very well The Ledger does food until 23:00, so the evening can simply keep going
