Garden Assessment · from USD 75
Site assessed, and one job you cannot do until August
Amsterdam Noord. What the garden needs, in what order, and the hedge that is legally off limits until the birds have gone.
An hour on site with Joris on 29 September. The garden is in better shape than you think and needs less than you were quoted elsewhere. The hedge reduction you asked about cannot happen until August, and clause 03 explains why that is not us being cautious.
180 m² rear garden, structurally sound, with a mature beech hedge, one established birch and borders that need dividing rather than replanting. Autumn clearance and the border work can start in October. The hedge reduction cannot be done until after nesting season ends, and the birch may be covered by a municipal protection order, which is being checked.

The site
What is there
| Element | Condition | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn, 70 m² | Compacted, mossy in the shaded third | Scarify and aerate in March, not now |
| Beech hedge, 14 m, 3.2 m high | Healthy, overgrown by about 1 m | Reduce. August, see clause 03 |
| Silver birch, mature, 11 m | Healthy, well shaped | Crown lift only. Check protection first |
| Mixed borders, 42 m² | Overcrowded, not failing | Divide and replant. October |
| Paving and steps | Sound, slippery with algae | Clean in spring |
| Shed | Sound, felt roof nearing end of life | Not our work. Two to three years |
| Drainage | One wet corner after rain | Observe over winter before acting |
You mentioned a quote elsewhere for replanting the borders at around USD 1,400. The plants in them are healthy and overcrowded, which is a dividing job rather than a buying job. Division costs labour and almost no materials, and you end up with more plants than you started with.
Order
What to do when
-
Seasonal reset and border division
Clear, cut back, divide and replant. Best month of the year for it.
-
Leaf clearance, two visits
The birch drops over about three weeks. One visit is never enough.
-
Nothing
Genuinely nothing. Do not let anyone sell you a winter visit on this garden.
-
Lawn: scarify, aerate, overseed
The compacted lawn is a March job and doing it now would waste the seed.
-
Maintenance only
Mow, edge, weed. Fortnightly is enough for this size.
-
Hedge reduction
After nesting season. The one big job of the year.
-
Crown lift the birch
If the protection check allows it.
Legal
The two constraints that set the timing
| Constraint | Status | Who checks |
|---|---|---|
| Nesting season, 15 March to 15 July | Applies to the hedge | Us, and a visual check before any cut |
| Municipal tree protection on the birch | Being checked, result in 5 days | Us, against the gemeente register |
| Permit for a protected tree | Required if it is listed | You apply, we supply the arboricultural detail |
| Green waste disposal | Licensed carrier | Us. Registration on the invoice |
| Noise restrictions | Powered tools 07:00 to 19:00 weekdays | Us |
| Neighbour boundary on the hedge | Your side only without their agreement | You, before August |
Waste
Where the green waste goes
- All green waste is removed unless you want it composted on site
- GreenGrounds is a registered waste carrier and the registration appears on every invoice
- You are entitled to ask where your waste went, and we will tell you
- Nothing is burned, on site or anywhere
- Woody material from the hedge reduction is chipped, and the chip is yours if you want it for the borders
- The compost heap behind the shed is usable and we would rather use it than fill a truck
