A calendar tells you a birthday is tomorrow. This tells you that your mother's is on 3 December, that she liked the ceramics last year, that the maker you bought from takes three weeks, and that you therefore need to decide by 12 November.

Four order-by dates in the next three weeks

Nine occasions fall between now and mid January. Four of them involve something that has to be made, shipped or booked, and their order-by dates are 8, 12, 16 and 20 November. Everything else can be handled in the week.

Mum, birthday Order by 12 Nov, 3 Dec Maker, 3 wks
Ines and Tom, wedding Order by 16 Nov, 9 Jan From their list, which is emptying

The four flagged items are the only ones where the gift cannot be bought in the week. Everything else on this list is a normal shopping trip, which is why the order-by column matters more than the date column.

Two entries record that a gift did not land: your father's whisky and Leila's candles. That is the most useful thing in a gift record and the thing nobody writes down, because it feels unkind to note that somebody was polite about a present.

03

Milestone

Your father's 60th

The only one on the list that is a milestone rather than a birthday, and the only one where last year's gift landed badly. Three directions, and the order-by date is 8 November for all three.

Direction 1

Something engraved and specific

A dated, engraved object referencing something only your family would know. Four week lead, roughly USD 120 to 240. The safest milestone gift and the one that requires the earliest decision.

Direction 2

A collected contribution

Something larger, paid for by several people. Requires organising others by about 15 November, which is its own task, and it is the only way to reach a gift of real significance at this budget.

Direction 3

An experience with you in it

Two tickets to something, going together. Costs less than it looks and it is what most people remember from a 60th. No lead time problem if booked by early December.

04

Budget

What this period costs

Planned spend to mid January
Dad, 60th USD 220 Milestone, higher than a birthday
Christmas, 11 people USD 385 About USD 35 each
Ines and Tom, wedding USD 140
Sofia, 40th USD 95
Mum, birthday USD 70
Grandparents USD 55
Jakub USD 40
Leila USD 35
Marcus, new baby USD 45

About USD 1,085 across eleven weeks, of which USD 605 falls in the first three. Knowing that in October is the difference between a planned spend and a December that feels like it got away from you.

  • Dad's direction decided by 8 November
  • Mum's ceramic ordered by 12 November
  • Sofia's pottery class booked by 20 November
  • Wedding list checked by 16 November, before it empties
  • Christmas list started by 4 December
  • Note what landed and what did not, in January
