You asked for a weekend that does not feel like a checklist. This plan gives each day one neighbourhood, keeps the walking under 7 km a day, puts the two things you must book at the front, and leaves both afternoons genuinely open. Nothing in it requires being anywhere at a specific time except two bookings and the flight home.

Book two things, decide the rest there

Only two items need booking in advance and both are cheap to hold. Everything else in this plan works on the day, in any order, and the fallback options exist because it rains in Porto in October about one day in three.

Shape

One neighbourhood a day

Porto is small and steep. The mistake visitors make is crossing it four times a day. This plan stays in one area per day, which is why the walking numbers are low and the afternoons are free.

DayAreaWhy this dayWalking
Friday evening Around your stay, Cedofeita You land at 18:40. Do not plan anything real 1.5 km
Saturday Ribeira and the river, ending in Gaia Saturday is the busiest day. The river absorbs crowds better than the centre 6.4 km
Sunday Bolhão, Santa Catarina and Batalha Market and church day. Quieter on a Sunday than you would expect 4.8 km
Monday Foz, if the flight allows Flight is 15:20. Tram out, coffee, tram back 2.2 km

Saturday

The one day with a shape

  1. 09:30

Breakfast near where you are staying

Do not walk into the centre for breakfast. Every café within 300 m of you does the same thing for a third of the price.

  2. 10:30

Walk down to Ribeira the long way

Downhill the whole way. Going back up later is the part people forget, which is why the day ends across the river instead.

  3. 12:30

Lunch on the riverfront, off the main row

One street back from the water is roughly 40 percent cheaper and better. Look for a written daily menu rather than a photographed one.

  4. 14:00

Cross the bridge on the lower deck

Free, flat, and the better view. The upper deck is the metro and it is windy.

  5. 14:30

    Open afternoon in Gaia

Port lodges if you want them, the cable car if the queue is short, or sitting by the water. This is deliberately unplanned.

  6. 18:00

    Sunset from the Gaia side

The city is on the other bank, which is the direction the light comes from. This is the single best free thing in the plan.

  7. 20:00

Dinner in Gaia, then taxi back

Do not walk back up the hill after dinner. A taxi is about USD 7 and the walk is 25 minutes uphill.

Booking

What to book, and what not to

Booking priority
WhenWhy
Saturday dinner, Gaia Book nowSaturday at 20:00 with a view is the one genuinely hard booking
Livraria Lello timed entry Book nowOnly if you want it. Timed entry, sells out, and it is very busy
Port lodge tour Book on the dayPlenty of availability in October, and you may not feel like it
Sunday lunch Walk inSundays are quiet. Booking removes the best part of the day
Friday dinner Walk inYou land at 18:40. Do not commit to a time you might miss
Monday coffee at Foz Walk inNothing is busy at 09:30 on a Monday

Two bookings for a three day trip. Any plan that has you booking six things has removed the reason for going.

Money

Where USD 600 goes

CategoryEstimatePer dayNotes
Food and drink USD 300 USD 100 Two people. Lunch about USD 25, dinner about USD 60
Transport in the city USD 45 USD 15 Metro from the airport, two taxis, one tram
Entry and activities USD 90 USD 30 Lello, one port lodge, one church
Coffee and pastries USD 55 USD 18 Underestimated by everyone. You will do this four times a day
Something unplanned USD 110 Keep this
Total USD 600

Accommodation and flights are excluded as you asked. The unplanned line is 18 percent and it is the difference between a weekend you enjoyed and one you rationed.

If it rains

Fallbacks and the practical bits

PlannedIf it rains
Saturday riverfront walk Metro to Jardim do Morro, stay on the Gaia side, port lodges are indoors
Sunday market and streets Bolhão is covered. Then the Batalha cinemas or a long lunch
Monday Foz tram Skip it. Breakfast near the stay, leave for the airport earlier, no loss
Sunset on the Gaia side There will not be one. Eat earlier and go to bed
  • Shoes with grip. The pavement is polished stone and it is lethal wet
  • Metro card bought at the airport, loaded for the weekend
  • Saturday dinner booked
  • Lello booked, or consciously skipped
  • Cash for the smaller cafés, cards are common but not universal
  • Flight home is 15:20, leave the city by 13:00
